Melville based-Comtech Telecommunications has been granted a five-year contract valued at $45 million to improve the 911 calling system in Washington State.

The firm is slated to install and maintain a next generation 911 system or Internet Protocol network that would replace the existing system that carries voice and limited data.

Comtech CEO Stanton Sloane said the new system “will represent one of the nation’s most advanced public safety emergency networks.”

He added that the system would be able to handle wireline, wireless and voice over Internet protocol or VoIP calls and texts.
