New Albany church finally gets new steeple

NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) - It was a day of celebrating in downtown New Albany on Thursday as a historic church got its new steeple.

WAVE 3 News was there at Town Clock Church, now Second Baptist Church, as crews installed a new 65-foot spire.

The original steeple stood as a beacon of hope during the years of the Underground Railroad, but was destroyed by lighting in 1915.

"We're excited about restoring the pride, and the civic, and community support that we have been able to render. It's just important to, at times like this, for people to pull together for a project, and they have done that," Second Baptist Church Pastor Leroy Marshall said.

It took the church nearly four years to get its new steeple in place.
