New Dollar General coming to East Pike in Zanesville

ZANESVILLE — By next spring, Mickey's Restaurant on East Pike will likely be gone and a new Dollar General will be in its place.

According to property transfers on the Muskingum County Auditor's website, the old Mickey's Restaurant, located at 3015 East Pike, was sold for $140,000 on Sept. 21. Katie Kile, spokeswoman for Dollar General, said the new store would tentatively be open for business in mid-spring 2016.

"We're excited about any new location to a community," she said.

There are three Dollar General locations in Zanesville, one in Gratiot, one in Nashport, one in Dresden and one in Duncan Falls. A Dollar General distribution center is located in Zanesville as well.

The new location is about 10 minutes outside of the city. Kile said the company purposely seeks out areas far from convenient shopping to expand their stores.

"Our stores are located in small towns," Kile said. "We look for locations where we feel is a need."

Establishing stores in areas with little or inconvenient shopping can help ease stress on residents, Kile said, by providing a place where at least basic needs can be met.

"It's easier to drive five minutes down the road than 20 minutes," she said.

The planning for the new location is still in the early stages, Kile said, but she thought construction would likely begin soon. There is no definite opening date or official construction timeline set yet.

Any number of factors could delay the opening, she said, but early next year is the goal.

Typically, six to 10 employees are hired in a new store, Kile said. The jobs would be a mix of part-time and full-time with an average of three full-time positions available.

The full-time positions are manager or assistant positions, she said, but any jobs available won't be posted until construction gets fully underway.
