A large fire has completely destroyed an industrial unit and left about 40 homes without power in Surrey.

About 50 firefighters spent several hours tackling the blaze which started at Jointing Technologies in Woking Business Park just before 19:00 GMT.

Flames and smoke could be seen from miles away at the height of the fire.

The blaze was brought under control at about 23:00 GMT on Thursday but crews were still damping down at the industrial unit on Friday.

Chris Webb, from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, said they had managed to isolate the fire to the one unit.

"The unit that was on fire was pretty much totally destroyed but the units on the other side are suffering minor water damage and some smoke damage," he added.

No-one is believed to have been injured in the fire.

Nearby residents were initially advised to keep their doors and windows closed because of the smoke.

UK Power Networks said about 40 houses and businesses in the surrounding area lost power and its engineers were "working hard to fix it as quickly as possible".
