Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The 6,132 fans in attendance at Fluor Field for Drive Business Downtown on Wednesday were treated to an old-school pitcher's duel early in the game, but the Greenville Drive erupted late and finished a sweep of the Greensboro Grasshoppers with a 7-4 win.
For six innings, Drive (13-7) starter Robby Sexton and Grasshoppers (9-11) starter Dylan Lee traded zeroes to keep the game cruising. Sexton allowed just one hit and two walks with seven strikeouts, and Lee struck out four while holding the Drive to three hits and two walks.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Drive rudely greeted new Greensboro hurler Sam Perez for seven runs to take a big lead. The big blow in the frame was a three-run home run for Mitchell Gunsolus that traveled 417 feet and hit the batter's eye, and that homer made the score 7-0. The Drive also received run-scoring singles in the inning from Lorenzo Cedrola, Chris Madera, Tyler Hill and Tucker Tubbs.
The big inning made a winner out of Hildemaro Requena, who improved to 2-0 after working two innings of relief.
The Grasshoppers got on the board in the eighth thanks to a two-run homer by Garvis Lara, and RBI doubles in the ninth by Boo Vazquez and Jarett Rindfleish cut the Drive's lead to three.
Gunsolus went 2-4 with three RBI to lead the Greenville offensive outburst, and Madera and Tubbs joined him with two-hit afternoons.
From here, the Drive will hit the road to begin a four-game series against the Augusta GreenJackets, an affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. First pitch on Thursday night is at 7:05. Left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez (1-1, 3.38) will start the opener for the Drive, and right-hander Matt Solter (2-0, 2.93), a former Furman Paladin, is the scheduled starter for Augusta.
