Vulcan Materials vice-chairman Danny Shepherd to retire April 1

Vulcan Materials' Company's Vice-Chairman will resign April 1, the company announced Tuesday.

Danny Shepherd started at Vulcan in 1973 after graduating from Georgia Tech. After leaving the company in 1993 he returned to Vulcan in 2002 as president of the Southeast Division.

Donald James, Vulcan's chairman, announced in February he would retire at the end of the year.

Vulcan is the largest producer of construction aggregates, like gravel, sand and stone, in the United States. Vulcan Materials is a Fortune 1000 company, and is a component of the S&P 500. It's headquartered just off of I-459 in Birmingham.

"Danny has been a leader among leaders for many years at Vulcan and in our industry, providing invaluable guidance, counsel and management expertise.  He will be greatly missed," James said in a statement.
