RAMONA, Calif. — Pat Belden, better known as Mrs. B, is one of many homeowners affected by the heavy rain in Ramona two weeks ago.

The heavy downpour triggered flooding in and around the 97-year-old’s home, even causing a back up in her home’s septic tank which forced sewage to spill onto the floors.

The World War II veteran suffers from congestive heart failure and is bedridden. Her primary caregiver, Debbie Labbe, is deeply concerned for Belden’s health. Labbe said she and two volunteers from a local Christian rehabilitation center, In His Steps, have been working around the clock to help Belden.

The caregiver has found mold in the carpets, walls and furniture. She told FOX 5 every room had some type of contamination, whether it was infested with mold or bacteria from the sewage spill. The home’s air conditioning also broke, making it hot and humid inside the home.

For now, Labbe has kept Belden in the living room, where a donated air purifier sits nearby, so she can watch television or listen to music to get her mind off of the current situation.

Belden’s insurance company told her caregivers it would not cover flood damages, as the flooding was “an act of God.”

Labbe said they are desperately trying to keep Belden in good health, but there are no more funds to pull from.

Community members have offered food and water for Belden and Labbe since the flooding. The Salvation Army has provided gift vouchers to replace the moldy furniture. The local Red Cross has also offered to put Belden in a hotel temporarily, but because of her fragile state of mind and high anxiety, she is reluctant to leave her home.

FOX 5 reached out to the county. The Health and Human Services Agency said they have already been made aware of Belden’s situation and are ready to assist.
