Mario Cibelli Adds to Largest Stakes in His Portfolio

Guru Mario Cibelli (Trades, Portfolio), who founded Marathon Partners nearly 20 years ago and has a reputation as a long-term investor, increased his stakes in familiar companies in his portfolio in the fourth quarter.

Cibelli added to the two largest stakes (by volume) in his portfolio – Shutterfly Inc (SFLY, Financial) and Xoom Corp (XOOM, Financial).

In two separate purchases, one in October and one in December, Cibelli added a total of 770,000 shares to his stake in Xoom, a San Francisco-based digital money transfer company and the largest stake in Cibelli’s portfolio. Cibelli paid $14.41 per share in October and an average price of $16.48 in December. The October acquisition had a 5.25% impact on his portfolio. The December acquisition had an impact of 5.11%.

Xoom has a P/E of 0, a Price/Book of 2.1 and a Price/Sales of 3.6.

PRIMECAP Management (Trades, Portfolio) and Chuck Royce (Trades, Portfolio) have shares of Xoom in their portfolios. Ron Baron (Trades, Portfolio) divested himself of his holdings in the fourth quarter.

In two other fourth-quarter purchases, Cibelli added 135,00 shares to his second-largest stake, Shutterfly, an internet-based image publishing service headquartered in California, paying $40.81 per share in November and an average price of $42.56 in December. The November purchase had a 1.62% impact on his portfolio. The December purchase had a 2.14% impact on his portfolio.

It was the fifth consecutive quarter that Cibelli has added to his stake in Shutterfly.

Shutterfly has a P/E of 0, a Price/Book of 2.4 and a Price/Sales of 2.0.

Cibelli purchased 230,000 shares of Darling Ingredients, a Texas-based producer of sustainable natural ingredients used in edible and inedible products, for an average price of $18.08 per share. The purchase had a 1.6% impact on his portfolio.

Darling Ingredients has a P/E of 36.0, a Price/Book of 1.2 and a Price/Sales of 0.6.

HomeAway has a P/E of 218, a Price/Book of 3.0 and a Price/Sales of 6.8.
