DES MOINES, Iowa – If you’re shopping on Small Business Saturday, your chances of finding a deal depend on where you choose to go.

“I didn’t put any signs out, but I am running a 15% off, if anybody asks,” said Dianne’s Antiques owner, Dianne Storres, in Valley Junction.

“We’ve had a lot of people coming in, saying, ‘Oh yeah, I’ve seen it on advertising, on Facebook, on commercials, American Express, that it’s Small Business Saturday,” said Meggan Fox of Porch Light in the East Village. “And we’ve had a lot of foot traffic, and a lot of people buying, so that’s good too.”

It may not be a unanimous day of savings among the small, local shops across the Metro. But for some, today isn’t about more sales.

“Basically, all this talk of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday – while it’s great, and it’s great for business and extra sales, like, really, is that what the holidays are all about,” said Jennifer Hansen, owner of Eden in the East Village.

Hansen’s shop has chosen to donate 10% of all proceeds from Black Friday through Cyber Monday to Above and Beyond Cancer, a local charity.

“Because you have more traffic in your store, so, it just brings awareness to people what’s important to you,” she said. “And giving back for us feels really good this year.”

For those who embrace shopping locally, today is just like any other day, says Hansen.

“I do think that a lot of our customers treat every day like Small Business Saturday, and that’s they want to shop local, and they want to keep their dollars local, and that’s kind of why we’re here,” she said.

But for some shoppers, a day set aside solely to focus on shopping locally is an important symbol.

Deals in some places, donations in others, and dead silence everywhere else; Small Business Saturday in Des Moines is summed up by its name – it’s small.
