Friday Sector Laggards: Energy, Technology & Communications

The worst performing sector as of midday Friday is the Energy sector, showing a 1.1% loss. Within that group, Murphy Oil Corp (NYSE: MUR) and Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 5.3% and 4.8%, respectively. Among energy ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (AMEX: XLE), which is down 1.8% on the day, and down 10.68% year-to-date. Murphy Oil Corp, meanwhile, is down 33.10% year-to-date, and Chevron Corporation, is down 19.12% year-to-date. Combined, MUR and CVX make up approximately 12.5% of the underlying holdings of XLE.

The next worst performing sector is the Technology & Communications sector, showing a 0.1% loss. Among large Technology & Communications stocks, Micron Technology Inc. (NASD: MU) and Qorvo Inc (NASD: QRVO) are the most notable, showing a loss of 5.9% and 4.0%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Technology & Communications stocks is the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK), which is down 0.3% in midday trading, and up 3.92% on a year-to-date basis. Micron Technology Inc., meanwhile, is down 46.53% year-to-date, and Qorvo Inc, is down 17.53% year-to-date. Combined, MU and QRVO make up approximately 0.8% of the underlying holdings of XLK.
