JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Best Buy in Jackson, MS is closing its doors to customers.
A spokesman for the company confirms the store will shutdown by the end of October.
The employees are being told to apply at the other two remaining Metro locations in Flowood and Madison. If they don’t find a job there will be given severance packages according to Best Buy. No details on that however.
What we do know is this is another loss for Ridgewood Court and a number of customers are unhappy about it.
Even on a Monday afternoon, Best Buy in Ridgewood Court is still a busy place full of customers just now learning of its impending closure.
One customer says, “I don’t feel they should have taken it.” Another says,”I know there’s one in Flowood and one in Madison I believe. I think it’s a inconvenience for the city of Jackson.”
“I do like coming to the physical store. I like looking at the cameras. So I can just see them pick them up and ask questions,” says another patron.
Officials with Best Buy say this closure is a part of a transformation strategy ending their lease here early.
Ward One Councilman Ashby Foote says that translates to the company struggling in a market favoring online electronics sales. He adds there may be new opportunities for this spot.
“One that comes to mind is Costco.we’d like for Cosco again to think about the city of Jackson. I know that they’re involved in a situation over in Richland.but this may be an opportunity for Cosco to rethink their opportunities in Jackson,” he says.
Spokesman Shane Kitzman says the company is taking its business elsewhere based on a “change in customer traffic” Sixty-one people are employed at the Best Buy in Jackson.
Kitzman says the company will be taking their applications at nearby stores. The metro-area chains in Flowood and Madison are set to stay open.
The last day for this store is October 31, 2015, which is just about 15 years after opening in this spot.
