NeuroMetrix opens new clean manufacturing facility in Woburn

New wearable pain-management device spurs company's growth

WOBURN, January 12, 2015 – NeuroMetrix began 2015 with a new 6,000-square-foot production facility at Cummings Properties’ 4-B Gill Street location. The opening of the Woburn site coincides with NeuroMetrix’s launch of its latest pain-management device, called Quell.

The company, publicly traded as NURO, develops wearable medical technology and point-of-care diagnostics to help patients and physicians better manage chronic pain, nerve disorders, and associated sleep disturbances.

Cummings Properties leasing director Derek Cook worked on this transaction with NeuroMetrix senior vice president and chief financial officer Tom Higgins as well as Keith Coulter of McPherson Corporation.

“We chose the Gill Street location based on Cummings Properties’ reputation as a landlord, the depth of the maintenance staff, and the attractiveness of the building from the outside,” said Higgins. “Another key factor was the opportunity to design the interior to suit our needs.”

The Gill Street space was previously used as a warehouse, however, NeuroMetrix required a combination of clean manufacturing, office, and warehouse space.

“NeuroMetrix came to us with clear needs and an aggressive timeline,” said Cook. “In a little over a month, our design and construction teams completely rebuilt the space from floor to ceiling.”

According to Higgins, the new facility is integral to the growth of the company. It will allow for the launch of new products by providing dedicated space for assembly, warehousing, and fulfillment. The clean manufacturing site features five assembly lines designed to manufacture its three current product lines: DPNCheck, Sensus, and Quell.

“We were very pleased to deliver keys to NeuroMetrix ahead of schedule,” said Cook. “This is an exciting time for this innovative company, and we are happy to have them join our growing life sciences cluster.”

Cummings Properties manages multiple properties in the Gill Street area, which are home to many life sciences firms, including Amgen, Calloway Labs, Covaris, Courtagen, Cryogenetics, EMD-Millipore, and Genzyme.

On January 5, just one day after Quell was unveiled at the international Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, technology news source CRN named Quell one of its “25 Hot Products From Opening Night.” NeuroMetrix is currently taking preorders for this over-the-counter product, with the intention of starting shipping in the second quarter of 2015.

NeuroMetrix, headquartered in Waltham, currently employees 35 people with plans to add contract and permanent staff incrementally as demand for Quell increases. It was founded by Dr. Shai Gozani in 1996 as a spin-off from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Gozani serves as president, chief executive officer, and chairman.

Cummings Properties’ 10 million square feet of prime space accommodates offices, healthcare facilities, laboratories, retail storefronts, warehouses, co-working spaces, executive suites, and more. With a portfolio of this size and variety, the firm can meet almost any commercial real estate need from 150 square feet to 300,000 square feet. Its in-house experts in design, construction, and property management offer “one-stop shopping” for leasing clients.
