Seth MacFarlane-Hosted 2016 Breakthrough Prize Ceremony to Air on Nat Geo, Fox (Exclusive)

Top scientists and mathematicians land $3 million prize apiece

National Geographic Channel and Fox are combining resources to air the 2016 Breakthrough Prize ceremony, which will once-again be hosted by “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane.

The Silicon Valley awards show honors today’s most prominent scientists and mathematicians, with each recipient landing a $3 million prize. This year, for the first time, the ceremony will also feature the New Horizons in Mathematics Prize, which will recognize a maximum of three up-and-coming junior mathematics researchers.

Presenters will be announced shortly.

The Breakthrough Prizes were founded by Sergey Brin (Google) and Anne Wojcicki (23andMe), Jack Ma (Alibaba.com) and Cathy Zhang, Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) and Priscilla Chan, and Yuri and Julia Milner (DST Global).

Past honorees include C. David Allis, Victor Ambros, Alim Louis Benabid, Gary Ruvkun, Jennifer A. Doudna, Emmanuelle Charpentier, Saul Perlmutter, Brian P. Schmidt, Adam Riess, Simon Donaldson, Maxim Kontsevich, Jacob Lurie, Terence Tao, Richard Taylor, Michael B. Green, John H. Schwarz, James Allison, Mahlon DeLong, Michael Hall, Robert Langer, Richard Lifton and Alexander Varshavsky.

To date, Breakthrough Prize has awarded over $160 million in total.

Don Mischer Productions will produce. For National Geographic Channel, Char Serwa is executive producer; Matt Renner is vice president, production; and Tim Pastore is president, original programming and production.

The ceremony will be broadcast live in the U.S. on National Geographic Channel Sunday, Nov. 8, at 10 p.m. ET/9 Central, with a one-hour version of the ceremony scheduled for Fox on Nov. 29, at 7 p.m.
