A car struck by a train near Kemnay was driven onto the tracks by a drunk driver, police say.
Brandon RCMP Cpl. Mike Boychuk agreed that the case was a weird one.
“I still scratch my head when people hit trains on the road, never mind driving down the railway track,” Boychuk said.
Emergency crews were called to the Canadian Pacific Railway line north of Kemnay on Saturday around 5:40 a.m.
Police say the investigation showed that a 2008 Pontiac G6 was driven onto the tracks, and then driven a short distance east along the line where it stopped.
An eastbound train ran into the back of the car at about 65 km/h, launching it into the ditch north of the tracks.
The train then stopped and remained on scene for more than two hours after the incident.
The man who was driving the car was taken to the Brandon hospital with minor injuries. He appeared to be OK as, at the hospital, he asked a male nurse for a kiss.
Police don’t believe the driver’s actions were an attempt at suicide. Rather, alcohol was a factor in the collision.
“We’re treating it as an impaired operation of a motor vehicle,” Boychuk said.
The man was the only person in the car at the time.
Boychuk said charges are being considered against a 25-year-old man from Sioux Valley Dakota Nation.
