UGI volunteers donate time, bikes to Community Bike Works

The Community Bike Works’ recently opened site at Mosser Village Family Center in east Allentown received a makeover and upgrade, as well as some new bicycles, thanks to employee volunteers from UGI Utilities.

Earlier this year, UGI employees helped Bike Works staff and students build a community garden. UGI employees delivered raised garden beds to Mosser Village, helped fill the beds with soil donated by First Regional Compost Authority, and assisted students in planting tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, beans, herbs and other vegetables.

UGI’s efforts to support Community Bike Works continued during the United Way Day of Caring in June. UGI employees saw an opportunity to assist with other items on the organization’s wish list, including clearing overgrowth and debris on the bike path through Keck Park. While some UGI employees spent the morning cutting, digging and clearing the way for the bike path, others created bike storage solutions so both Bike Works and Mosser Village Family Center could make the best use of their space.

UGI employees also collected bikes to donate to the Community Bike Works for use in its signature Earn a Bike program. Students team up with adult mentors for a 12-week course in bike mechanics and safety.

St. Luke’s cancer doctors published in medical journals

Two oncologists from St. Luke’s University Health Network have published peer-reviewed articles in prestigious medical journals, placing the St. Luke’s melanoma research team among the top global expert-investigators in this important clinical area.

Dr. Sanjiv Agarwala, chairman of medical oncology, is the first author of “Phase III Randomized Study of High-Dose Interferon in Melanoma,” which was published in the March issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Fellow St. Luke’s oncologist and chief of surgical oncology Dr. Darius Desai co-authored an article titled “Completion Dissection or Observation for Sentinel-Node Metastasis in Melanoma” that was published in the June 8 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. This work is expected to have a direct and meaningful impact on patients, as fewer will have to undergo certain painful and debilitating surgeries.
