Dover track will install more SAFER barriers

Dover International Speedway is making safety upgrades before NASCAR returns Oct. 1-2.

Dover International Speedway will add more than 500 feet of SAFER barriers in time for its Sept. 30-Oct. 2 race weekend, the track announced Friday.

The so-called "soft walls" will be added at the exit of Turn 2 under the backstretch walkover bridge and at the exit of Turn 4 on the frontstretch.

Dover also will remove a grass hill in the garage area to increase space for the team transporters, whose close proximity to garage stalls created the most narrow, dangerous garage area in NASCAR.

What did Jimmie Johnson suggest will improve racing?

“We continue to improve our facility for all parties involved in NASCAR, including drivers, race teams and fans,” Dover International Speedway president and CEO Mike Tatoian said. “Safety is always our top priority and the added SAFER barriers will certainly benefit our competitors. The renovations in the garage will also allow us greater opportunities for space flexibility in the coming years, too.”

In May, Jamie McMurray and Tony Stewart both hit the outside wall exiting Turn 4 in an area with no SAFER barrier.
