GREENSBORO, N.C — If you’re fretting over how much you have to fork over for college tuition, all the extras might just send you over the edge. But student IDs can help you out.

“I use it to get better deals on movies and hanging out with friends,” said UNCG student Bryce Moore as he showed us his ID.

Speaking about her experiences in college, former student and FOX8 Web Producer Alix Hines said, “It’s super expensive, it adds up.”

We’re talking computers, microwaves and more; but a little piece of plastic, a student ID, can help save the day. Flash that bad boy and save big!

Money-saving experts say now is the time for sweet college discounts.

“You’ll see so many deals that you will never see again for the rest of the year. We see a lot of parents who want to wait until Black Friday, but the good deals on computers are now and they’re cheaper than they will be on Black Friday,” said MoneySavingQueen’s Sarah Roe. “I encourage people to visit gift card websites, like GiftCardGranny.com, to save 10 percent on a Best Buy card, for example. And then use that along with the already-low prices right now.”

Companies such as Apple, Sony, Lenovo and Hewlett-Packard all offer student discounts. Clothing retailers Ann Taylor, Banana Republic and Footlocker are among the many clothing stores where college students can nab discounts up to 20 percent.

So, what if your child is an incoming freshman and doesn’t yet have a student ID? “Just have them take some paperwork from their school saying that they’re a student, or their driver’s license, most stores will honor that and if not, always talk to the manager,” Roe said.
