She became a viral hit for her bizarrely-delivered speech at last year's Tory conference.

So no one could blame Liz Truss if she wanted to slip under the radar... and she came so close.

Sadly for the environment secretary, she prompted a comedy reaction by saying it was time for children to know 'the proper names of animals'.

She began trending on Twitter as armchair comedians suggested what 'proper' animals might be called.

Suggestions so far have included 'bacon tree' and 'spotty milk cannon'.

Other commentators got confused and wondered if she was talking about Latin names.

"Loxodonta africana and Elephas maximus for elephants might be tricky for 5 year olds," wrote Noel McGivern.

And there was the inevitable joke at David Cameron 's expense - with one Twitter user saying: "For Liz Truss, this is called a 'pig' and not a 'date'."

Ms Truss delivered her speech today with notes, unlike most of her colleagues who read their scripts from a giant autocue set within the crowd.

It is not known whether the tactic was to avoid the stares down the camera lens which made her famous last year.

The Tory minister went viral after grinning into viewers' eyes as she said: "In December I'll be in Beijing, opening up pork markets!"

And she said: "We import two-thirds of our cheese. That. Is. A. Disgrace."

This year the delivery was a little different, with Ms Truss staring at her notes immediately after making her comments.

She said: "Thanks to our rigorous national curriculum children will be learning about where food comes from and the proper names of trees and animals."

Other memorable lines today included praising 'innovative gin distillers' and 'far-sighted farmers like Peter and Di Wastenage'.

The cheery environment secretary also said: "Our children should be climbing trees, not the walls!"
