A seven-year-old boy has died in hospital after he was pulled unconscious from a community lake on Friday evening.

On Saturday, family members laid flowers outside the gates at the entrance to the lake in memory of Caleb.

The child was spending time at the lake with his family during a birthday party. The festive atmosphere came to a crashing halt when Caleb's unconscious body was spotted and recovered from the water.

Emergency crews were called to Auburn Bay Lake in the city’s southeast at about 6:40 p.m. and encountered a Good Samaritan attempting to revive the child.

"A bystander was performing CPR." explained EMS spokesperson Naomi Nania. "We were very close to the South Health Campus hospital so we did transfer there but he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries."

A sign outside of the entrance indicated the lake would not open Saturday:

"Auburn Bay Lake will be closed today out of respect for the family and community impacted by the accident on July 24th. We will reopen Sunday, July 26th, 2015 at 9:00am."

Auburn Bay Lake access is restricted to residents of the community and their guests. According to the residents association, Brookfield Properties manages the lake operations and an investigation into the drowning death has been launched.

Community members say the association will discuss hiring lifeguards to patrol the lake, which is roughly eight metres deep at some locations, during its next scheduled meeting.

Members of the neighbourhood's charity organization, the Auburn Bay Angels, are asking residents to tie red ribbons in front of their homes in memory of Caleb.
