Biotech, computer sciences likely to exit from PU CET

From the next academic session, Panjab University will not include computer sciences and biotechnology in the common entrance test (CET) for under-graduate courses. This was recommended by the committee headed by the Dean of University Instructions, Prof Dinesh Gupta, after having a relook at the issue.

The committee was constituted by Vice-Chancellor Arun Kumar Grover. The report will be tabled in the syndicate meeting on January 21 for a final nod and later sent to the senate for consideration.

The committee, in its report, recommended that the PU CET (UG) should be conducted only for mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. There should not be any entrance test for computer sciences and biotechnology which are actually optional subjects. These two subjects are not taught in all the schools affiliated to the board.

Another recommendation of the committee was that while declaring the results of the PU CET (UG), merit should not be mentioned, because merit is actually determined after taking into consideration the weightage of Class XII marks during the admission process. The committee suggested that two different ranks given in the result card and shown on the website for admission create confusion among the students and they find it to be misleading.

Postal service agreement extended 

The university has signed an agreement with the postal department to extend the date of submission of the examination and re-evaluation fee at the post offices. The university extended the time period for one year as per the agreement. PU Registrar Col (retd) GS Chadha said, “Panjab University is the first university which has initiated and implemented such services for the students enrolled with them.”
