Arsene Wenger only wants top quality Black Friday-style bargains

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says the only Black Friday-style bargains at the club will be players of high quality.

"We are in a position where we want to do something," Wenger insisted.

"I love a bargain. Who doesn't love a bargain? A bargain for us is to buy players of top quality, because only top quality strengthens our squad."

Black Friday hails from the United States and takes place on the day after Thanksgiving, with shoppers seeking goods such as food and electrical items at reduced prices.

"I don't know many people that don't like a bargain," said Wenger, 66.

Asked if he understood why people got so excited by the sales, the Frenchman added: "If they need two TVs, yes. But if they don't need one, why should they buy two? That's where you come back to what is a bargain.

"I can tell you I bought Patrick Vieira for £2.5m and it was a top bargain because he was a top-quality player. We spent nearly £40m on Mesut Ozil but I still consider it a bargain because the player is top quality."

The Gunners beat Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday to keep their Champions League hopes alive, three days after losing to West Brom in the Premier League.

Midfielder Aaron Ramsey returned against Dinamo after a spell out with a hamstring injury, while winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could play against Norwich on Sunday (16:15 GMT).

Forward Theo Walcott is also back in training and close to a comeback, but striker Danny Welbeck remains out.

Chile playmaker Alexis Sanchez injured a hamstring in midweek but Wenger said it "might not be the best moment" to rest him.

The Frenchman described Arteta's injury as "short term" but said Coquelin would be out for "much longer" - though he does not need surgery.

He added: "Walcott goes through a few tests and steps but the first one was successful.

"He started running again on Tuesday and had no reaction. He has no big hurdle to get across and hopefully he will be successful."
