'My prepaid currency card won't work'

Our consumer expert helps a reader who has been unable to activate a currency card

Convenience: prepaid currency cards are an alternative to carrying cash while abroad

Around a decade ago I obtained a Caxton FX card denominated in euros. It worked well until the middle of March.

Then it was withdrawn and replaced with a different card with qualities I do not need. All my attempts to activate this card have failed. I have repeatedly emailed Caxton to no avail. I have tried telephoning but the calls are never answered.

Caxton is in the process of upgrading its currency cards, which, it says, will make life simpler for its customers. It will gradually be replacing all Visa, Global Traveller, Euro and Dollar cards with a single Caxton FX Mastercard.

Customers can apply for one of these new cards online or will automatically receive one when their Visa cards are due to expire. The cards come with a leaflet on how to activate them.

Further to my involvement you have been given the direct line of someone who will guide you through the process.
