Additional land has been added to the Windmill Ridge Nature Reserve in Vermont, the Vermont Land Trust announced Friday.
The land — 70 acres in Rockingham, Westminster and Athens that are now under a conservation easement — brings the reserve’s total acreage to 1,934 in the towns of Athens, Brookline, Grafton, Putney, Rockingham and Westminster.
The now-protected land originally was in two parcels, one of which was the Brelsford parcel, according to a news release the Vermont Land Trust sent Friday. The land’s conservation protects wildlife habitat and public recreation, as well as the historic Hazen Farm homestead site, which dates back to around 1870. The Bemis Hill Trail, which runs along the western and southern borders, links up with other Windmill Hill Pinnacle Association trails open for non-motorized public use.
“The Windmill Hill Pinnacle Association is excited to conserve more acres of crucial wildlife habitat and better protect the ridgeline trail from future development. We are incredibly appreciative that so many people are willing to work with us to help protect this important land and to ensure that these lands remain accessible for hiking, hunting and observing nature,” Paul Wilson, the Windmill Hill Pinnacle Association’s land acquisitions committee chairman, said in the news release. “We thank the Brelsford family for recognizing the importance of conserving this property, our donors and supporters, the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board and the Vermont Land Trust for working with us on this and so many other projects which benefit all Vermonters.”
The conservation project was supported by a grant from the housing and conservation board. The Windmill Hill Pinnacle Association — a private, nonprofit volunteer group — will own and manage the land, and the Vermont Land Trust and the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board will hold the easement.
