Marvel and DC are both expanding their superhero universe with their separate event comics. It seems like the "Transformers" team of writers is taking a page out of that by looking at a "Beast Wars" story arc to expand the Transformers universe and they are reportedly going to start with "Transformers 5."

The writers of the fifth "Transformers" movie are surrounding themselves with everything Transformers, in hopes of digging deep into the history and mythology of the alien robots. Head writer, Akiva Goldsman, said that their workspace is full of everything from the Hasbro franchise and toys to television shows and other Transformers-related merchandise, including old sketches.

And what do they hope to achieve with this type of immersion? Goldman told Deadline, "After that super saturation, the writers will figure out not one, but numerous films that will extend the universe."

One way that they hope to expand this universe is to explore the "Beast Wars" story arc, a 1996 animated TV series which launched Generation 2 of the Transformers. Goldman said of the possibility, "If one of the writers discovers an affinity for 'Beast Wars,' they can drive forward on treatments that will have been fleshed out by the whole room."

"Beast Wars" told the story of the Autobots' descendants, the Maximals and their enemies, the Decepticons' descendants, the Predacons. The two factions are led by Optimal Primal and Megatron, respectively.

"Transformers 5" currently has a wide range of writers who all have big television and movie hits in their resumes.

The original team was composed of "Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Lost" writer, Jeff Pinker, "Iron Man's" Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, "Pacific Rim 2's" Zak Penn, and "The Walking Dead" creator, Robert Kirkman.

They were later on joined by "Ant-Man" writers, Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari, "Black Hawk Down's" Ken Nolan, plus Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Christina Hodson, and Lindsey Beer.

Michael Bay will again be directing the movie. "Transformers 5" is slated for a 2016 release.
