The City of Timmins and Goldcorp have reached a land deal worth about $800,000 that will allow the mining firm to expand.

In total, it's around 1,100 acres of property, and it's all currently unused, however, Goldcorp has some big plans for it.

The project involves re-opening and expanding two of its open pit mines.

Marc Lauzier is the Porcupine Mine General Manager at Goldcorp.

"We approved the City of Timmins as part of our Project Century to purchase some surplus land that we need, mainly for the storage of waste rock and for tailings storage in the future. It’s great news for Timmins, thanks for asking!  So, it's a significant investment that I hope the company will make to allow us to stay in operation for 12 to 15 years." said Lauzier.

Officials say if all goes well, construction could begin in a couple of years.
