LANSING, MI. (WLNS) – The Lansing Mall has a new curfew policy for young shoppers.

It’s due in part to a large number of complaints about rowdy teenagers at the mall.

The new policy says no one under the age of 17 will be allowed inside the Lansing Mall after 6 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, beginning this weekend.

The only exception is if they’re with an adult who’s at least 21 years old.

Lansing Mall patron Matthew Moorer says some teens are troublemakers, and the new policy will help shoppers like him.

“They don’t have to be heckled, you know, bagged around, you know, and, and, most of all they feel safe,” Moorer said. “You know, I’ve been hearing stories about people who say that they didn’t feel safe because of the fighting.”

The Eaton County Sheriff’s Department says seven fight calls came from the Lansing Mall in all of last year.

In comparison, already in these first few weeks of 2016, the same number of calls were made.

The Eaton County Sheriff’s Department also gets disorderly person calls from the Lansing Mall.

And though they don’t all involve teens, store managers like Brennan Hattaway say they see this disorderly conduct first-hand.

“My associates get cat-called, and like, I have, I have, you know, patrons and customers who come in and, and do complain about some of the rowdiness in the mall,” said Brennan Hattaway, the store manager for Lansing Mall’s Aeropostale.

And complaints are part of the reason why the new rule is in place.

The mall’s owner, Rouse Properties, says, “Our top priority is the well-being of our customers, retailers and employees and to provide them with a pleasant shopping experience in a safe and family-friendly environment.”

A way they’re hoping to create that environment is with family night programs.

Store managers say teens usually come to the mall to hang out, but families come to spend.

“Anything that the mall can do to drive in, like, additional traffic, in, um, you know, to get parents and families into the mall is a great thing,” Hattaway said.

A great thing — for buyers and sellers alike.

The first family night program is a Valentine’s Day photo and craft event.

It’s this Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
