If Murphy’s Law has one fictional victim it stalks, tortures and maims, but doesn’t kill — it’s clearly Meredith Grey.
The physically and emotionally scarred “Grey’s Anatomy” star, played by Ellen Pompeo, has been a medical miracle throughout the show’s long run.
If near-death experiences and losing her soulmate, sister, and mother weren’t enough, Thursday’s mid-season premiere kicked the unlucky doctor when it seemed she had little left to lose.
**MAJOR SPOILER ALERTS**
In the latest dose of misfortune, the recently widowed doctor was brutally beaten by one of her patients, convincing fans even further that creator Shonda Rhimes knows no mercy —and neither does Denzel Washington, who surprisingly directed Thursday’s show.
Perhaps the only thing Pompeo’s character is safe from in the never-ending medical drama is death itself.
And yet, throughout the show’s 12 seasons, her tragedies have often seemed worse than meeting her final day.
Here all those times:
When she grew up without a father and with an alcoholic mother
Little Grey was just as cursed as her future self.
With her father out of the picture, Grey’s closest guardian was an Anatomy Jane doll she held as she wandered the hospital hallways of where her brilliant surgeon of a mother, Ellis (Kate Burton), worked.
When her mother tried to kill herself and she had to call police
Credit Meredith’s dark twistiness with the childhood memory of her mom slitting her wrists — all because her married lover, Richard, left her.
When her mom then had Alzheimer’s and her cruelty increased
Almost twenty years after her attempted suicide and losing most of her memory, Meredith’s mother still only wants Richard.
Ellis became aggressive towards her daughter and called her “ordinary,” possibly the worst comment she could have made.
When she fell in love with a married man who didn’t pick her
Like mother, like daughter.
Meredith fell in love with Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). It just would have been too easy if the married beau choose her when she begged him to “pick me.”
When her hand was literally on a bomb and she survived
Not only did she make it, but she treated the patient with the explosive in his chest.
The bomb, of course, blew up seconds after she left the operating room. Like a cat, Meredith would continue to cheat death.
When she tried to kill herself and was saved, only to learn her mother died
A depressed Meredith drowned and the only onlooker to save her was a mute girl.
After a bizarre afterlife scenario, Meredith managed to return to life hours later and discovered that her mom had died.
When she operated on and lost one of her best friends
No character is safe on Shondaland. George (T. R. Knight) was one of the first main characters Rhimes killed off in budding career.
The disfigured John Doe was operated on by Meredith, who later realized she was dealing with another loss.
When Derek got shot right in front of her and she suffered a miscarriage
Poor Mer. She finally got the guy and had to see a mass murderer shoot him. She’s later held at gunpoint as her dying beau is operated on — a trauma that causes her to lose her baby.
When she survived a plane crash but lost her half-sister
Good news seems to come with bad news for Meredith.
She made it out of a horrible plane crash but had to stay in a deserted area with her dead half-sister until she was rescued.
This was naturally just as the siblings were making peace.
When she gave birth during a blackout and almost died
This is probably the nicest turnout for Grey. Both she and baby survive.
When Christina left
Even Meredith’s “person” (Sandra Oh) couldn’t stick around to watch the horrible events of her best friend’s life unfold.
When Derek died, right after the couple made up and he kissed another woman
It seemed the biggest problem in season 11 was going to be Derek’s wandering eye —or so Rhimes wanted viewers to think.
Meredith somehow gathered the strength to pull the plug on Derek, uttering the words “It’s OK, you go,” which left viewers crying rivers.
When she not only has to raise her children alone, but learns she’s pregnant
One life ends, another begins? Apparently Derek’s parting gift from the beyond was leaving his now-single wife knocked up.
Meredith does what she does best and closes herself off, leaving everything she worked for behind, except for her children, for a year.
When she gets attacked and even her kids can’t take it anymore
After weeks of recovering from her patient’s assault, which left her with ear loss and her jaw wired shut, Meredith is reunited with her kids.
The uncontrollable events in their early lives are already mirroring Meredith’s cursed life and they reject her hugs, sending her into a panic attack.
