Reports reaching yours truly indicate that the Japanese Community in Ghana is training every weekend at the El Wak Sports Stadium in preparation for the Millennium Marathon that will shake Accra on Saturday, September 5.

Mr, Isaac Tetteh of the Japanese Embassy said many diplomats and employees of JICA and other agencies have expressed interest in the marathon.

He noted that they are not aiming at the grand prize, but to join the society to exercise and link up with new friends and clients, however if the opportunity comes that a Japanese win the Millennium Marathon, they will be very happy.

With a brand new Peugeot car at stake for the winner in both male and female categories, long distance runners have taken the event very seriously and are preparing.

Ghanaian long distance runners are have also taken the Millennium Marathon as serious business and have stepped up their training.

Sources close to the champion runners state that winners like Godwin Adupko, Millicent Boadi, Gifty Koomson, Elizabeth Bortor and Raja Lable have intensify their training schedule with less than 10 working days to go.

The Upper East region which could not honour the Regional Millennium Marathon is bringing down to the capital 50 top athletes to compete in the Accra Race.

The event has attracted hosts of sponsors like Airtel Ghana, NIB, WATS, The Royal Bank, CAL Bank, Goil, Papaye, Fan Milk, MANET, Huawei, Adidas, Canon , Alisa Hotels, IPMC, Melcom, ddp, Compu- Ghana, Litina Travel. Tullow, Total, HP, First Capital Plus Bank, Fedex, First Atlantic Bank, Ethiopia Airlines, Blue Skies, GTV Sports Plus, Graphic Communications, Starr FM and Coca- Cola.

Ashim Morton, Managing Partner of the Millennium Marathon Sports Limited has urged other companies to support the event.

Keep Fit Clubs in Accra have also join the fray and are training to win the major prizes at stake.

Lucas Kabutey of the Mamprobi Liberty Keep Fit Club said his group is also ready to shake the capital with their jama songs and pray one of their members win the first prize.

The Expo on Health and Fitness that precedes the main Race will see over 200 vendors displaying Latest Sporting Equipment, Leading Fitness Apparel, Nutritional Foods, Celebrity Fitness Training, Industry Lounge & Networking Sections, Celebrity and Expert Training Zone and Nutritional Advice.
