Virginia House votes to allow growing of industrial hemp

The Virginia House of Delegates on Tuesday passed legislation that would allow industrial hemp to be grown in Virginia. The measure now moves to the state Senate, where a similar proposal is pending. Del.Joseph R. Yost, R-Giles, the measure’s sponsor, on Monday had touted the economic advantages that industrial hemp would provide for the state, in particular in Southside and in Southwest Virginia. “Industrial hemp can be used as a cheaply produced alternative component in numerous modern products, including fabrics, building materials, composites used in cars and insulation,” Yost said in a statement. “Virginia has a long history of safe industrial hemp production, as early settlers in Jamestown grew hemp for paper, rope and clothing.”
