LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Kroger is pulling four of its spices off store shelves because they may be tainted with Salmonella.

The recall is for Kroger brand Bac’n Buds in 12 ounce bottles; coarse ground black pepper in 17.1 ounce packages; ground cinnamon in 18.3 ounce packages and garlic powder in 24.7 ounce bottles.

The recall impacts stores in 15 states, including Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Virginia, Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana.

The recalled spices were sold in Kroger, Jay C, Dillons, King Soopers, Fry’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs, Food 4 Less and Smith stores.

Kroger announced the recall Monday, after discovering the possible contamination issue.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 hours to 72 hours after someone is infected.

The CDC says on average, the bacteria sickens 1 million Americans each year, causing 380 deaths.

Most people recover without treatment after four to seven days, however some severe cases may require hospitalization.
