Today's mobile market has been saturated with large-screened smartphones and it seems that with each new release, devices get bigger and bigger.

Earlier this month, Samsung China surprised consumers by launching a flip phone Android device. It seems that the company is banking on appealing to consumers who want to relive the days when flip phones were all the rage, but at the same time, still function in the 21st century.

Despite the retro-look of the flip phone, make no mistake, Samsung's latest offering is anything but dated. The beautiful device packs powerful hardware, similar to what you see in Samsung's flagship devices.

Despite launching in August, it was only recently that leaks featured actual photos of the device and just from the photos alone, it seems that the flip phone is quite an interesting and appealing offering from Samsung.

The Samsung flip phone, or model number SM-G9198, features two 3.9-inch Super AMOLED panels with a 768 x 1280 screen resolution. Both screens are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4 panels, similar to what Samsung uses for the Galaxy S line.

Users can opt to use the front side of the flip phone like a regular smartphone, or open the flap to take advantage of the device's physical keys.

The device is also quite capable as it is powered by a hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor with 2 GB of RAM.

The SM-G9198 also has a 16 MP rear camera with a f/1.9 aperture and LED flash and a 5 MP front-facing camera with the same f/1.9 aperture.

There is 16 GB of internal memory, which is expandable up to 128 GB via a microSD slot. The device also offers 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and dual-SIM capabilities. It also features a heart rate sensor.

The flip phone has a removable 2,020 mAh battery. It is loaded with the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OS with Samsung's TouchWiz UI on top.

Judging from the specs of the device, it is easy to see that it is quite capable and even on par with some smartphones in the market. Ultimately, the device is targeted for consumers who want to carry a niche phone but still enjoy the latest Android experience.

As of now, the device is a China exclusive but consumers should wait to see if Samsung makes an announcement regarding the device during the IFA tech show. Samsung may also opt to ship the device to international markets, similar to what LG has done with its own clamshell device.
