Kimmel is Kelly's first guest co-host, post-Strahan

Live! With Kelly and ... Jimmy?

With Michael Strahan bowing out May 13, a few months earlier than planned, for a new gig on ABC's Good Morning America, the network's late-night host Jimmy Kimmel has been tapped as Kelly Ripa's first guest host on the May 16 Live!

Kimmel will be in New York anyway, for his annual stand-up routine at ABC's upfront presentation to advertisers on Tuesday. But don't expect the Jimmy Kimmel Live! star to be a contender for Strahan's permanent replacement: Disney ABC Television Group, which syndicates the show, plans several weeks of on-air tryouts, much as it did when Regis Philbin left the show in 2011 before settling on Strahan.

CNN's Anderson Cooper and Bravo's Andy Cohen have coyly expressed some interest in the gig. Both are Ripa pals. Disney hopes to have a permanent replacement in place when the show begins its new season in September, after several weeks of late-summer reruns.
