The last day of Jonathan Wallace's internship at Cary Woods Elementary School was a special one.
The Auburn quarterback and receiver was recently named to the 2015 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, and the school decided to throw a surprise ceremony to present him with his trophy in front of his family, friends, teammates, coaches and Cary Woods Elementary School students and faculty.
"This is a complete surprise," Wallace said. "I'm just thankful. I thank God and my family for the support. It's truly a humbling experience and I'm looking forward to continuing to give back to the community and serve others."
Aside from his work at Cary Woods, the senior from Phenix City serves as one of Auburn's offensive captains and has worked with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Auburn/Opelika Boys and Girls Clubs, various churches and also visits children battling illnesses.
"This is something that was instilled in me at a very young age," he said. "I remember putting on my first camp back home at the Open Door Community Center, and just being able to engage with those kids there was a tremendous experience. It was something that I had to do and something I wanted to do."
Wallace plans to become a football coach when his playing career is over and hopes to be a graduate assistant at Auburn next season.
He is one of 22 college football players named to the Good Works Team for their service to others, character, leadership and good academic standing. The honorees will unite for a community service project in New Orleans and will be recognized at the Sugar Bowl.
