Nationwide Children’s Hospital recently announced development plans for the Big Lots Behavioral Health Pavilion, a freestanding facility focused on behavioral health conditions in children and adolescents.

Development of the facility was made possible by a $50 million gift from Big Lots and big Lots Foundation and is part of a $730 million investment announced by Nationwide Children’s Hospital in 2016.

“The Pavilion is not just another building on our campus. Following the latest evidence-based treatment philosophies, the building provides patients with access to open community spaces instead of keeping them isolated,” David Axelson, MD, chief of psychiatry and behavioral health at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and medical director of Big Lots Behavioral Health Services, said in a press release. “Patient safety is a priority, and the Pavilion has been designed for the unique needs of behavioral health patients.”

The Big Lots Behavioral Health Pavilion will encourage collaboration between its behavioral health researchers and community partner agencies and provide the opportunity for expanded education and training for mental health professionals.

The pavilion’s clinical programs will include outpatient crisis clinic, mood and anxiety, family-based intensive treatment, general psychiatry and a partial hospitalization program.

The pavilion will also house a Center for Suicide Prevention and Research, a Family Resource Center, a rooftop outdoor play area and worship and meditation spaces.

“Families need our help. We need to break the stigma and let everyone know it’s okay to talk about it and seek help,” David Campisi, CEO and president of Big Lots, said in the release. “The Pavilion will be at the center of this national conversation.”

The facility will measure approximately 386,000 square-feet and open in 2020.
