Front curb appeal ( Porch etc.)

tonya44

I bought this very plain house, and would like to add a small porch to the front for curb appeal. Hard to tell in this picture, but the roof has a very low pitch. Not quite flat but probably rises 2 feet from gutters to the point of the roof. I have bought some heavy duty lumber, 6x6 and 8x8' and would like to incorporate those into the design. I just don't want it to end up looking like an after thought. Any ideas for porch, landscaping, and walkway, would be greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone! PS. We took out the big cedar tree on the left and the carport/deck is gone now too.

No advice on adding a porch except to get advice from a designer or it will look tacked on.

The façade has a choppy look to it. (Is it possible there's brick under the white siding? What's the age of the house? It almost looks like a midcentury modern style that was messed around with.) Painting the lower white portions of the house the same gray as the rest would help. Then paint your front door a bright color--mustard yellow, red, teal.

Can you provide a wider picture of the front yard? It looks as if your tree on the right could use a good pruning. Now that your cedar is gone, that area could be a beautiful garden bed to frame your house with a mix of hardscaping, shrubs, ground cover, perennials. Visit a garden center, not a big box store, to help you get started with a plan that will work in your zone.

You can do a portico squeezed in under the little window but it may look odd. See how this one squeezed under the eaves just looks tacked on. I think a better solution would be to put in a more contemporary door. See how the arched window on your door is in such contrast to the horizontal windows. Then add a simple roof to protect from the elements. No columns or posts, just something cantilevered or supported by brackets. You might get an architect to design and you build just to make sure it suits the feeling of the home. It should be simple construction work too.

Before you commence on anything, maybe start looking at images of "flat-roofed" houses or "midcentury ranch." Your house may or may not be that, but well designed flat-roofed houses may have solutions you haven't thought of. I've seen way too many Design Dilemmas where new buyers just hate tacked-on porticos, porches, etc. that don't conform to the houses' basic design.

Deco mentioned something I meant to also--your door style is out of synch with the style of the house. Look for midcentury door styles and paint it a bright color.

Thank you all for your advice. This house was built in 1970, and looked pretty much as is. No brick under the white siding :( I have toyed with taking that window above the door out.

Sorry, I don't have an updated photo. That would make it easier to comment. I have replaced the door with a side light and the door has 3/4 glass rectangle in it. I kind of like the dark blue color. Great idea to paint it all the same color! I'll try to post an updated photo

I didn't realize the house was dark blue--great color. I thought it was dark gray, but any bright color will make your front door more inviting:

The ingenious way the porch was built on this flat-roofed house is something to consider as time and budget allow.

Housegal! Great idea about the front door! I think I'll go orange.

What do you all think about the trim color? The paint is a dark blue/gray color, that I'd like to keep pretty close to.

This is a more recent picture. Mostly just the new front door, removal of deck/carport, and addition of covered basement walkway.

Would love to hear everyones ideas about landscaping too please. The front of the house is North facing. I think I will add a porch, and definitely some landscaping in front of the 2 narrow basement windows. I'm in BC Canada, if that helps.

Oh, wow! Big improvement with the new door.

Keep the blue color for your white siding and new wood, but leave the rest of the trim (except for the downspout) white for now. You'll need to get the blue color matched and prep that white siding before you paint. It'll make a huge difference. An orange door with a lot of red in it will look fantastic. Send photos. Down the road, consider widening your landing and putting a semi-flat overhang with cedar or painted supports that echo the pitch of your roofline. In the meantime, create an Ideabook of modern, flat-roofed houses that have porches. A designer is advised to get it right.

For now concentrate your energies on the landscaping in that small section where you took down the tree. Do native plantings, mulch, maybe a rock feature, and you won't have to mow that. It'll frame your house. You'll need a local garden center to help you design a wide garden bed next to the drive and pick the right plants for your zone. Here are some ideas of using rock features, mulch, grasses, ground covers, perennials, etc. though I have no idea what region the gardens are in. First one has too many rocks, but you get the idea.
