This is the unbelievable moment an off-duty pilot stuns passengers by texting and checking Twitter as the plane takes off.

The shocking footage was captured by Chad Tillman as he travelled on an American Airlines flight from Charlotte to Tampa in the US.

In the clip the man, wearing a pilot's uniform, writes a text message before attempting to look at his Twitter account and browsing the internet.

Just before the plane took off, the cabin crew has asked all passengers to make sure phones were in Airplane mode.

The video later shows him donning a captain's hat as he gets ready to leave the aircraft.

American Airlines insist he is not one of their pilots and works for another airline who the company has an agreement with to transport crew members.

The spokesman added that the airline in question, has been informed and are looking into the matter.

Speaking to Time Warner News, Mr Tillman said he "was worried about the plane's safety when the pilot violated those rules," and he subsequently reported the incident to American Airlines.

According to the American Airlines website, passengers "may use your cell phone, laptop computer, and other electronic devices onboard until advised by the flight crew, but please note that use of cell phones is not allowed during flight".

A spokesman for American Airlines told the Mail Online: "This was not an American Airlines pilot and he was not in the cockpit at the time the photo was taken.

"If any of our passengers are uncomfortable at any time on the flight, we urge them to bring it to the attention of the staff, who will address the situation immediately.

"We expect all out passengers to obey the instructions."
