Say hello to "Windows Update Delivery Optimization"
Microsoft today updated the Windows 10 beta, switching on a controversial technology that commandeers users' upload bandwidth to shift some responsibility for updating from the company's own servers.
Build 14915 was released earlier Wednesday to participants in the Windows Insider "Fast" track.
The notable change highlighted by Dona Sarkar, the software engineer who acts as the public face of Insider, was the enabling of Windows 10's "Delivery Optimization" technology.
Delivery Optimization, formally dubbed "Windows Update Delivery Optimization" (WUDO) by Microsoft, was part of Windows 10 from the get-go. But it was only switched on as of the November 2015 upgrade, which was pegged as 1511. Insider builds of Windows 10, however, were exempt until now.

...Any customer whose device is tapped for WUDO delivery has given Microsoft access to their upload bandwidth... This appropriation of bandwidth has led to criticism, most of it focused on the fact that WUDO was enabled by default. To opt out, users must modify Windows 10's preferences.

Yup. I have use boot, Win7-Lubuntu and spend a lot of time using different Linux distros I install on USB sick. When Win7 reaches end-of-support, I’ll dump it. Not moving up to 10 and endure MS-slavery as a forced update server.
This can be a very beneficial feature for everyone, but, of course, it should not have been a default. The few times that I have employed bit torrent for linux distribution downloads, I have left my system up as a server long enough to serve the community with as much bandwidth as I benefited. But I wouldn’t leave the spigot open forever. My ISP would complain about me running a server.
not a problem for me as I only run W10 in virtual box (the only fit place to run it anyway) to test software compatibility and it’s easy to disconnect from the internet, plus i won’t be doing anymore updates to W10 anyway.

No, this is beneficial ONLY for Microsoft.
How? It sounds like this just permits computers in a LAN to share updates over the LAN. That may result in more traffic over the LAN, and it might create security problems, but it should reduce use of Internet bandwidth.
The concept is that Microsoft updates can be supplied to the community at rates that are higher than what Microsoft can supply. When you need an update from Microsoft, do you want to “wait in line” for their servers or be able to get the same data elsewhere without a wait?
Bit torrent has been doing this for years. Many of us use it to download GB of data at a time. A community supported collaborative download can be much faster for the client. Thus, there is potentially a benefit for everyone, not just for Microsoft.
An examination of the screen in the article seems to show uploading enabled by default. There is a radio button where you can select uploads to be restricted to your local LAN, but if the screen has the default setting, then it shows internet uploads are enabled.

A slowed down computer is something some people might not add under the “benefits” category.
I just checked an updated Win 10 Pro computer. WUDO was set to on, but the "send updates to" button was checked for "PCs on my local network." I don't remember setting that, so it might be the default, or maybe the policy change did not affect my edition of Win 10 Pro.
Yeah, but what else gets uploaded?
Bought a new desktop with WIN 10.. pathetic performance, unbelievably slow and latency test was in the red a lot. I got rid of everything possible, turned off just about everything and little change. Reformatted the drive an loaded WIN 7 and it’s running like a champ.
It is that state of the art spyware on Windows 10—slowed down your system.
(Happy Windows 7 user—and I like my toasters, phones and cars as dumb as possible.)
I bought a new WIN 10 Dell Laptop in the spring and have no problems and it is faster than my WIN 7 Laptop. I kept 7 on the back up old laptop.
I don’t have any add ons or programs to worry about compatibility.
Sorry but the update did not update my delivery preferences.

Uh, people wait in line simply because Microsoft is too cheap to pay for adequate update capacity, and having their customers pay for the bandwidth and CPU capacity to do Microsoft’s updates for Microsoft benefits ONLY Microsoft, namely, Microsoft gets to save hundreds of millions in server capacity by putting THEIR responsibility on the financial backs of THEIR customers. Good thing Honda isn’t like Microsoft, expecting their customers to pay for oil changes for their other customers.
And yes, I know all about bit torrent: good luck in getting a large download to complete in under a day, if it ever completes at all. Bit torrent is the ultimate socialist data distribution solution: to each according to their need; from each according to their willingness. Too bad paying taxes doesn’t follow the bit torrent philosophy.
