US giant to expand Birmingham presence

US-headquartered Jacobs Engineering Group has revealed plans to expand its presence in Birmingham by opening a new office in the heart of the city's business district.

The base is located at Colmore Square and will provide space for up to 300 employees. It is expected to open in autumn 2015.

Bob Duff, group vice president at Jacobs, said the move will allow the business to serve the HS2 project.

"This new location in the heart of Birmingham and close to the region’s leading education providers furthers our long term commitment to the Midlands," he added.

"We are investing significantly in our Birmingham operations, with further phased expansion planned, which will support the region’s exciting vision to be a thriving economic hub.

"We expect this growth to yield greater opportunities for our existing employees and for new recruits, including graduates and apprentices, to enhance and develop their skills."

Sir Albert Bore, leader of Birmingham City Council, said: "Birmingham is at the heart of HS2, the UK’s most ambitious transport infrastructure project. There is already a strong sense of opportunity around HS2, and its forthcoming arrival is drawing global firms like Jacobs to the region.

"Some of the UK’s leading universities are located in Birmingham, and Jacobs’ commitment to training the next generation of engineers in the region will only help to solidify Birmingham’s competitiveness on the world-stage. Jacobs’ investment will bring jobs to the region and help to accelerate our strong economic growth."

Jacobs' clients include Network Rail, Highways England, Severn Trent Water and a number of local authorities across the region. The group has also worked on a number of landmark transport schemes, including HS1 and Crossrail.
