UNION BEACH - Police responded to what they described as an explosion just before noon at International Flavors & Fragrances at 1515 Route 36 that hurt one employee.

Carol Brys, a spokeswoman for International Flavors and Fragrances, described the incident as " a strong leak more than an explosion." Brys said one person was injured and that person was being treated at the hospital and was expected to be released today.

It didn't sound like anything major," Brys said. "It sounds like what might have happened was the result of a mechanical failure. The first concern is the safety of everybody. "The employee is doing great and he's expected to be released today."

The scene was clear at 3 p.m.

According to a Facebook post from the department, the incident was not deemed suspicious. Union Beach Fire Companies, Union Beach First Aid, Keyport First Aid, Monmouth County Haz Mat and Monmouth County Fire Marshall's office were responding to the scene. Check APP.com for more updates.
