OAKLAND — Residents were cautioned to stay in place Wednesday morning at their East Oakland hills homes and a freeway offramp closed after a vehicle crash severed a gas line valve, authorities said.
Police were also warning residents not to light cigarettes or fires until the leak was capped.
The gas line valve in the 3100 block of 73rd Avenue was broken about 8:40 a.m. Wednesday by the vehicle crash. PG&E crews were on scene later to make repairs.
It was not known what caused the crash but the vehicle driver was treated at the scene.
Residents on 73rd, Sunkist Drive, Simson Street and other streets were told to stay inside.
Vehicle traffic in the area was also being diverted. The Edwards Avenue offramp from eastbound Interstate 580 was also closed.
Officials expected the repairs to the gas line to take a few hours.
