See the insane trailer for Ryan Murphy's first Netflix show, 'The Politician'

Ryan Murphy's first Netflix series looks positively gleeful.

The prolific TV creator ("Glee," "American Crime Story") is bringing his talents and his bonkers style to Netflix for a slew of new shows over the next few years, the first of which, "The Politician," is due on the streaming service Sept. 27.

"Politician," which stars "Dear Evan Hansen" breakout Ben Platt and Gwyneth Paltrow, is a wild comedy that follows teen Payton's (Platt) intense race for student-council president; a running mate (Zoey Deutch) who may (but probably does not) have a terminal illness; and an opponent (Lucy Boynton) with a vengeful desire to take Payton down at all costs.

Like Murphy's other shows, something as simple as a school election provides big melodrama, intensity and even violence. The trailer is a bit of a mashup of Murphy's "Glee" and "American Horror Story," with a smidge of the classic Reese Witherspoon high school flick "Election" thrown in for good measure. In addition to big names like Paltrow, the series also features Murphy stalwart Jessica Lange as a con-woman grandmother. It's designed as an anthology series; a second season would explore another Payton race, furthering his ultimate quest: to be president of the United States, proclaimed as his destiny at age 7.

The series is created and produced by Murphy, Ian Brennan and Paltrow's husband, Brad Falchuk
