    Mumbai is the costliest city for travelers: TripAdvisor survey

    For the third consecutive year, Mumbai is ranked the most expensive city among those surveyed with a three-day weekend getaway amounting to Rs 39,956.

    MUMBAI: Mumbai has been ranked as the most expensive city in India for travellers among 9 key cities, while Chandigarh has been voted as the best value destination for a city break, says a annual study by travel portal TripAdvisor.
    For the third consecutive year, Mumbai is ranked the most expensive city among those surveyed with a three-day weekend getaway amounting to Rs 39,956. On the other hand, Chandigarh emerged as the most budget friendly city with a total cost of Rs 21,849 for the same trip for two.

    "TripIndex is a great indicator of how the cities are evolving as travel destinations and more importantly helps travelers to see where they get the best value for money," Nikhil Ganju, country manager, TripAdvisor India said in a press statement. "The cities in the TripIndex are either destination or a transit hub to many other locations. So while one can pursue their passion for travel, one can also draw an estimate and help plan and book a better holiday."

    TripIndex Cities - a survey which compares the cost of a three-night break during the summer travel months of June to August in 9 key Indian cities which include New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata and Chandigarh- takes into account typical costs for two people which includes a four-star hotel for three nights, lunch each day, a taxi to and from dinner each day, plus the cost of dinner itself.

    How the cities ranked against each other:

    Food: The overall expense of eating out in Chennai is the highest at INR 16,245and the least in Chandigarh at INR 7,596

    Taxi: Two trips of two miles each way (6.4 kilometers)in Mumbai will set you back by INR 949 making this six times more expensivethan Chandigarh (INR 150)

    Rent: Mumbai has the highest average hotel room rent of INR 23,092 for three nights. Hotels in Jaipur continue to remain the cheapest to stay with an average hotel room rent of INR 10,650 for three nights.
