OGDEN, Utah -- The University of North Dakota soccer team dropped its Big Sky Conference opener, 2-0, to Weber State at Wildcat Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, North Dakota now drops to 1-6-2 (0-1-0 BSC) on the season, while Weber State sits with a 3-4-1 (1-1-0 BSC) record.

I feel like we came out a bit flat today and when you do that against a good team like Weber State they will make you pay, and that's what they did,” head coach Matt Kellogg said. “We had to work our way back into the match and it took most of the rest of the first half to do that.”

Weber State got on the board early, scoring in the seventh minute of competition. The Wildcats' Madison Garlock took a shot from outside of the box and put it into the top corner of the net to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

The Fighting Hawks had two chances in the contest to get on the board, as WSU's goalkeeper Sydnie Brough did not record a single save in the game, but was bailed out by her back line both times from shots by Emily Smithson.

Despite the attempts to get a rally started, Weber State scored the game-clinching goal in the 87th minute to put the contest out of reach for UND.

North Dakota continues Big Sky competition next weekend in Idaho, taking on Idaho State, Friday, Sept. 30m and Idaho on Sunday, Oct. 2.

“We have a very short week coming up and we have to learn from today and make adjustments for next Friday,” Kellogg said.

UND's match against the Bengals in Pocatello, Idaho is set for a 5 p.m. (CT) kickoff.
