New Orleans police called out to string of violent weekend crimes
New Orleans police responded to a string of violent crimes, including several shootings and robberies, Saturday night into early Sunday in different areas of the city.The crimes were reported from Saturday afternoon to the early-morning hours Sunday, the New Orleans Police Department said.Officials said the incidents happened across different areas of New Orleans, including Mid-City, Hollygrove, New Orleans East, on Magazine Street and Central City.Among the incidents were four shootings, five armed robberies, a carjacking and a rape. Each case is currently being investigated separately by police.Rape investigation:Police were called to investigate a rape that was reported around 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the 3000 block of Conti Street. A 45-year-old woman told officers that she had been sexually assaulted by an unknown man.Four shootings:The first shooting was reported around 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the 4000 block of General Odgen Street. Police said a 19-year-old woman was shot by a woman who opened fire on her vehicle. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment.The second shooting was reported just before 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Leonidas and Forshey streets. A 29-year-old man told officers that he was getting into his vehicle when someone in a blue vehicle opened fire. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment.The third shooting was reported around 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Desire Drive and Stephen Girard Avenue. Police said a group of people were standing outside when someone opened fire. One man died and another man was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound.The fourth shooting was reported just after 2 a.m. Sunday in the 2300 block of North Robertson Street. Police said two women were in a fight when one of them went to shoot the other and ended up shooting a man who was with them. The man was taken to a hospital for treatment.Five armed robberies:The first robbery was reported around 6:30 p.m. Saturday at a Family Dollar in the 2100 block of North Claiborne Avenue. An employee of the store told police that a man came into the store with a firearm, took money out of the cash register and left.The second robbery was reported just after 8 p.m. Saturday at Cleveland Avenue and Elk Place. A man told police he was held up at gunpoint by one of three men. He said the other two searched his pockets, took money and a cellphone and left.The third robbery was reported before 8:30 p.m. Saturday at a Dollar General in the 8200 block of Earhart Boulevard. The cashier said a man came into the store and acted like he was going to make a purchased. Police were told when the cash register opened, the man grabbed the money inside and left in a green Honda.The fourth robbery was reported just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Fairmont Drive and Montpelier Street. A man told police he was approached by three men in a red SUV. He said one of the men took out a firearm and demanded his belongings. Police were told the men fled shortly afterward.The fifth robbery was reported around 11 p.m. at Magazine and Seventh streets.Two men said they were approached from behind by a man with a handgun. Police were told the victims complied and the robber left with their wallets and money.Carjacking:A carjacking was reported after 2:30 a.m. in the 5900 block of Bullard Avenue. A man told police he was getting something out of the trunk of his vehicle when two young men approached him. The victim said one of the men was armed with a revolver and demanded his property. Police said the two suspects left with the victim's wedding band, a pair of Jordan shoes, money and his 2014 Chevrolet Impala. The vehicle was found burned, police said.Investigators have not released detailed descriptions of the perpetrators in each incident. Additional updates are pending.Two robberies and two shootings were also reported between Friday afternoon and early Saturday.
