AT&T is expanding its ultra-fast Internet service, GigaPower, to Franklin.

The company began rolling out its 1 gigabit-per-second service to select multi-family units in May, including newer buildings in Nashville, Clarksville, Lebanon, Murfreesboro and Smyrna.

"The fact that we are one of the first communities in the Midstate to have this new service speaks to the exciting things that are happening here in Franklin," said Franklin Mayor Ken Moore. “Our community is thriving, and we are attracting the type of services and investments that position us well for continued economic growth and job creation.”

The expansion marks another play by AT&T to keep pace with Comcast and expand its gigabit breadth ahead of Google Fiber, which announced it was expanding to Nashville earlier this year. Google has said it will serve Davidson County initially.

Comcast's Gigabit Pro, which offers 2 gig-per-second speeds, will connect homes near the company's fiber network in Davidson, Williamson, Rutherford, Wilson, Robertson, Sumner and other Middle Tennessee counties, according to the company. Its modem option for gigabit speeds will roll out next year.

AT&T's GigaPower prices start as low as $120. For customers who choose not to share their search history, they will be charged as low as $149 a month, according to the company.

Comcast’s Gigabit Pro will be priced at $299 a month, with a promotional rate of $159.
