Beware: Spices Found with Salmonella

After chicken and sushi, now comes spices found to contain salmonella.  Kroger Co.  has issued a recall for four of its products: Kroger Ground Cinnamon, Kroger Garlic Powder, Kroger Coarse Ground Black Pepper, Kroger Bac n' Buds.

According to Cincinnati Business Courier, a sample of their Kroger Garlic Powder from a store in South Carolina was tested by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and found to be contaminated with salmonella. No illness has been reported, but as a potential health risk, all products processed in the same equipment and in the same facility identified as source have been recalled.

Krogers, based in Cincinnati, has employed its notification system, which alerts consumers who have purchased the recalled products through register receipt tape and phone calls. A customer may either ask for refund or replacement. For questions, call 1-800-KROGERS.

It has also issued the recall to all stores it operates across 31 states: Baker's, City Market, Dillons, Foods Co., Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Fry's, Gerbes, Jay C, King Soopers, Owen's, Pay Less, Ralphs, Ruler Foods, Scott's, Smith's and Kroger.

This is not the first product recall for Krogers. On its website is a page specifically listing all other recalls which range from dog treats to chocolate bars. The company was founded in 1883 by Bernard Kroger.  He invested his whole life savings of $ 372 and opened a grocery store.  Given the inflation rates, that amount is equivalent to $ 9,400 in 2014. The investment paid off, and is now the country's second largest supermarket chain by revenue, second to Wal-Mart. Last year, it had revenue of $ 108.5 billion. It employs 343,000 employees.

Weeks before this product recall, there have been various cases of salmonella, even with incidents of deaths, on products of chicken, pork, sushi and eggs. Local health officials and the FDA have been working overtime to curb these problems.
