Monday Sector Leaders: Financial, Materials

In afternoon trading on Monday, Financial stocks are the best performing sector, higher by 1.1%. Within the sector, Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE: WFC) and Ventas Inc (NYSE: VTR) are two large stocks leading the way, showing a gain of 2.5% and 2.2%, respectively. Among financial ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (AMEX: XLF), which is up 1.1% on the day, and up 3.33% year-to-date. Wells Fargo & Co., meanwhile, is down 6.48% year-to-date, and Ventas Inc is up 33.18% year-to-date. Combined, WFC and VTR make up approximately 8.3% of the underlying holdings of XLF.

The next best performing sector is the Materials sector, higher by 1.1%. Among large Materials stocks, CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE: CF) and Newmont Mining Corp (NYSE: NEM) are the most notable, showing a gain of 4.3% and 2.5%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLB), which is up 1.0% in midday trading, and up 14.21% on a year-to-date basis. CF Industries Holdings Inc, meanwhile, is down 36.51% year-to-date, and Newmont Mining Corp is up 127.85% year-to-date. Combined, CF and NEM make up approximately 5.0% of the underlying holdings of XLB.
