For Ben (Boo) it will be a homecoming of sorts. “I used to live in Port from the age of about three until I was about seven,” he says. “I’ve always had a connection there, I love going back.”
The pair performed at the 2016 Festival of the Sun (FOTSUN). “That [FOTSUN] was really good, an amazing festival,” Ben says. They look forward to dropping by and have a few days to chill out before heading off to Albury for a gig at the Kinross Hotel on June 8.
Ben and Sammy (Seeka) met through their mutual manager on December 28, 2014. “I showed Sammy some demos and we literally spoke for about half an hour and we were putting a song together.”
He says ever since that debut song Kingdom Leader came out “it’s been mental”. It was uploaded to triple j Unearthed on January 15 after its January 5 release.
Their unusual name was a collaboration, and they maintain the mystery by sticking with first names only.
With soulful vocals and electronic beats their music is a merging of hip hop and alternative synth sounds. This seems a world away from the music that was on the stereo at Ben’s home.
His parents listened to Lionel Ritchie, ELO, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac. “As I was growing up I had a dream to see the world. I used to watch my idols and think ‘how cool would that be’ and now I’m doing it,” the 28-year-old says. “It’s the best outcome possible.
“I mean you’ve got to work hard, but it’s mental that you can catch it [success] from the universe.”
Their follow-up singles were released in quick succession. Ben says they had to basically write songs in their hotel room. “We had to fill half an hour when we got our first gig.”
It must have been daunting as Ben doesn’t read music and is a self-taught guitarist. “Sam is more musically qualified than I am, he went to AIM (Australian Institute of Music).”
But whatever karma put them on the same path must have been something special. “In that first rush of getting the single out I thought, ‘I hope we get on’, Ben says. Now they spend time together even when they’re not working. “He’s [Sammy] become like my brother,” Ben says.
Not that there has been much downtime with two European tours, trips to the US and their homeland tour, all in the past two and a half years. “To know our music has connected with people [around the world] is amazing.”
Their debut album, featuring seven new tracks, is slated for release in August.
They are road-testing some of the new songs on this tour and Port fans will hear them plus their four five hits at The Basement on Sunday, June 4.
