CINCINNATI — Right when customers were jumping on the Internet to take advantage of Cyber Monday deals, Time Warner Cable went down throughout large areas of at least four states Monday night.

DownDetector.com showed outages spread throughout the Midwest affecting Green Bay, Milwaukee, Detroit, Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Louisville and Lexington.

The outage appears to have started just before 8 p.m. ET and lasted about two hours.

"Time Warner Cable customers in the Midwest experienced intermittent issues with Internet and On Demand services this evening," said Mike Hogan, Time Warner Cable spokesman. "Services have been restored for all customers. We are still working to determine the root cause of the problem."

Phil Wisneski of Green Bay, Wis., was trying to go online to submit material for a mass communications class he is taking through Ohio’s Kent State University Monday when he realized he had no Internet service. The course is the last one he needs to earn his master’s degree.

“First, I asked my son if he was hogging all the bandwidth with his video games, but he wasn’t,” Wisneski said. “Then I reset my modem, but that didn’t work, either. I ended up using the wireless hotspot from my phone.”

Time Warner’s Internet service was “very flaky from 7-ish (CT) until about 9:30,” said Scott Crevier of De Pere, Wis., just south of Green Bay. “But all seems fine now.”

Time Warner Cable responded directly to customers via social media, including Facebook and Twitter.

Customers also took to Twitter to complain about their lack of access to Internet deals on Cyber Monday, one of the biggest sales days of the year.

And while some were angry about potentially paying more for holiday gifts, one Twitter user riffed on the time-honored cable issue.

For customers of other cable companies, the temptation to poke fun was just too much.

"I’m feeling pretty smug that I have Uverse tonight,” said Liz Lincoln of Milwaukee. The Wisconsin city was one of the areas affected by the Time Warner outages, according to DownDetector.com.
