College Foundation Brings International Business Speaker to Centralia

The Centralia College Foundation’s Ellis Oliver Speaker Series has scheduled a “Start With Why” presentation hosted by speaker David Mead for 6 p.m. Thursday, May 25. The event was originally scheduled to take place at Corbet Theatre but has since been moved to Room 122 at the TransAlta Commons.

A social hour is scheduled for 5 to 5:45 p.m. in the lobby and includes a no-host bar and snacks.

Director of Donor and Alumni Relations Julia Johnson said the program is about energizing business owners and helping them find their purpose.

“David believes that every one of us deserves to wake up inspired to go to work, feel safe while we’re there, and come home at the end of the day fulfilled by the work we do,” according to startwithwhy.com.

Mead began his career in corporate training. In 2012, he began speaking and facilitating workshops about leadership in the workplace.

“Specializing in organizational culture and leadership, David shifts perceptions about the reasons why organizations really exist, what leadership is and how human biology plays into it all,” according to startwithwhy.com.

The Ellis Oliver Endowment is intended to sponsor programs to benefit the business community, Johnson said.

However, the foundation wasn’t sure how to best serve area businesses, so Johnson set up a panel involving area business owners and representatives from the Centralia-Chehalis Chamber of Commerce and the Lewis Economic Development Council to brainstorm about how to best use the funds from the endowment.

They sent out a survey to Chamber members, many of whom asked for a program similar to the nonprofit TED Talks. Research into that organization led them to Mead and “Start with Why,” Johnson said.

“The reason we’re doing this is to help benefit local business owners,” she said.

The event is free, but guests are asked to RSVP at startwithwhy.bpt.me in order to plan for the social hour.
